Alma Idella Davis, 96, of Rockford, Ohio, died Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at 2:10 p.m., at Otterbein Retirement Community in St. Marys, where she was a patient. She was born in Van Wert, Ohio, on May 24, 1920, to Jacob Ellsworth and Ida Idella (Howell) Squires. On March 25, 1939, she married Basil Eugene Davis, who preceded in death on April 15, 2000. Alma had lived all her life in the Rockford area, and was a member of the Rockford United Methodist Church. She had been a member of the Mercer County Farm Bureau and the Mercer County Farm District for many years. She was the secretary of the Mercer County Soil and Water Conservation District , retiring from that position. Surviving are two children: Lowell (Mary) Davis of Troy, Ohio and Darlene (Marvin) Shindeldecker of Rockford, Ohio; six grandchildren: Loren (Melanie) Shindeldecker, Debra (Charlie) Bauer, Vaughn (Laura) Davis, Valerie (Paul) Collins, Jill (James) Leighner, and Troy (Leslie) Shindeldecker; seventeen great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren. Deceased in addition to Alma's parents are seven brothers: Wilber, Herb, Bill, Cordier "Doc", Ray, Odell, and John Squires; and seven sisters: Opal Bischoff, Mary Paige, Myrtle Clover, Orpha Hamrick, Tisha "Dove" Boze, Rhetta Squires, and Nettiedelle Squires. Respecting the wishes of Alma, private graveside services will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2017, at 11:30 a.m., at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, with Pastor Chip Steffy officiating. Burial will follow. Memorials may be directed to the Rockford Carnegie Library or to Shanes Park, Rockford.
