Betty Johnson

Betty L. Johnson, age 91, passed away at 4:12 PM Thursday, December 26, 2013 at the Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center. She was born August 21, 1922 in Martins Ferry, Ohio to Frank P. and Margaret (Davies) Callahan. On July 4, 1942, she married M. Wayne Johnson. He died on July 14, 1991. Betty graduated second in her class from Edison High School, East Gary, Indiana in 1940. She was employed for 22 years as a receptionist/secretary at Celina Moving & Storage, an agent for Atlas Van Lines. She was a member of New Horizons Community Church (formerly Otterbein United Brethren in Christ church). She very ably served the church as financial secretary for more than 30 years, taught Sunday school for many years, and served as a secretary of the church board for a number of years. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling. Her excursions took her to most every state in the union. Betty is survived by her loving children, Connie (Dwight) Rhoades and Charles Johnson of Van Wert; Cheryl Slotter, Bluffton; John (Carla) Johnson of Rockford; Peg (Craig) Miller of Shipshewana, Indiana; Bradley (Robyn) Johnson of Celina. She is also survived by one brother, Frank (Velma) Callahan, Jr., Jackson Center, Pennsylvania and one sister, Phyllis (Fred) Schmidt of Valparaiso, Indiana. Fifteen grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester Callahan and Robert Callahan. Services will be held at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home in Rockford, Ohio on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 10:30 AM with Reverend Mark Rutledge officiating. Burial will be a Riverside Cemetery, Rockford. Friend and family may call at the funeral home from 2:00 until 4:00 PM and 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Sunday, December 29, 2013, and on Monday, one hour prior to the service. Memorial donations may be directed to the New Horizons Community Church, Rockford.
