Carl F. Fogt, 96, of Van Wert, Ohio, passed away on March 11, 2018 at the Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born on September 3, 1921, in Shelby County, Ohio, to Herbert O. and Mary B. (Zorn) Fogt. Carl served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 during World War II and was a life member of the American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert. He married Fae Miller on June 13, 1948, in Highland, Ohio. After Carl graduated from The Ohio State University in December 1950 with a degree in agricultural engineering, he and his family moved to Van Wert in 1951. A member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, he had served on the church council. He retired in 1981 from working in the seed corn industry. In his free time, Carl enjoyed making candy buckeyes for family and friends and crafting framed Christmas trees and wreaths out of jewelry and lights.
Carl is survived by two daughters, Marcia (Grayson) Snyder of Amherst, New York, and Carla (Philip) Hoverman of Archbold, Ohio; four grandsons, Scott (Cathy) Snyder of Chicago, IL, Thomas Snyder of San Bruno, CA, Ryan (Emily) Hoverman of Tiburon, CA, and Trent (Christina) Hoverman of Dublin, Ohio; and five great-grandchildren, Owen and Lucy Hoverman of Dublin, Ohio, Andrew Hoverman of Tiburon, CA, and Sebastian and Meredith Snyder of Chicago, IL. He is also survived by two brothers, the Rev. Eugene (Mona) Fogt of Sugar Land, Texas, and Herbert (Ada) Fogt of Troy, Ohio, and one sister, Ruby Cecil of Brownsburg, Indiana.
His wife Fae Fogt with whom he had celebrated 66 years of marriage preceded him in death in 2014. His parents, two brothers, Norman Fogt and Virgil Fogt, three sisters, Wilda Fogt, Miriam Holtkamp, and Doris Mays, two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Fogt and Donna Ruth Fogt, and three brothers-in-law, Dick Cecil, Charlie Holtkamp, and Robert Mays, also preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery with graveside military honors performed by the combined units of American Legion Post 178 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803, both in Van Wert.
