Charles Maysey, Sr

PLAIN CITY, Ohio - Charles C. Moysey, Sr., 91, of Plain City, formerly of Van Wert, Ohio, passed away peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by his family on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

He was born June 15, 1919, in Kelley Island, Ohio, to the late Glenn Moysey and Ruth (Coe) Moysey. His wife, Virginia L. (Finkhousen) Moysey, survives of Plain City, Ohio.

Other survivors include his children: Dianne (Steve Treece) Fisk of Van Wert, Barbara (Johnny) Ferguson of Albany, Ky.; stepchildren: Connie Uncapher of Van Wert, Debra Jenkins of Celina, Ohio, Cheri (Bill) Karn of Plain City, Cindy DeHaan of Angola, Ind., and Pam (Dave) Hendricks of Hilliard, Ohio; grandchildren: J. Zachary Fisk, M. Devin (Sandrine) Fisk, Cpl. Charles C. Moysey, III, Chelsey E. Moysey; stepgrandchildren: Tracy Carter, April Ruppert, Laura (Zach) Taylor, Jennifer Hendricks, Joshua DeHaan, and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Charles C. Moysey, Jr., and his brothers, Robert Moysey, Walter Moysey and Glenn G. Moysey, Jr.

He was a former member of First Presbyterian Church, Van Wert, Ohio. Charlie was a kind and joyous man, a loving husband, father and friend and was the eldest of the 4 Moysey boys, all of whom served in the armed forces.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in WW II with a rank of Master SGT. He fought in the battle of Guadalcanal with the 147th Infantry Regiment. After being honorably discharged from the United States Army, Mr. Moysey obtained the rank of captain in the United States Army Reserve and honorably discharged on June 10, 1957.

After WW II, Charlie returned to his hometown of Eaton, Ohio, where he and his younger brother, Walter, established Moysey Brothers Clothiers. In 1963, they expanded their business and Charlie moved his family to Van Wert. After Charlie's retirement in 1985, Moysey's Clothing remained in downtown Van Wert and was run by his daughter, Dianne, until its closing in 1994.

As an avid athlete, he loved to golf, bowl and play tennis and he was no stranger to the dance floor. In his later years he took up shuffle boarding to stay fit. He spent a lot of his weekends and vacation time on the water boating at Dale Hollow Lake in Kentucky and Coldwater Lake in Michigan. He taught all of his children and extended family how to ski. In his early retirement years he and his wife Virginia moved to Florida to enjoy the warm weather and sun-filled days. In 2003 they moved back to Ohio to be closer to their loved ones where they resided with family members in Plain City, Ohio.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, Van Wert. Burial will take place at a later date in Mound Hill Union Cemetery in Eaton, Ohio. Military services will be conducted by combined units of the Van Wert American Legion and VFW. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are to Van Wert American Legion Post 178 or donor's choice.
