Dale Merriss

Dale A. Merriss, 92, of Van Wert passed away at 8:41 AM on August 26, 2019 at Van Wert Health. He was born on April 25, 1927 in, Detroit, MI, to the late John and Gladys ( (Bobbitt) Merriss.

Dale attended Van Wert High School and went on to serve in the United States Army during the end of WWII. He married the love of his life, Billie Simpson, who passed away on May 4, 2013. Together, they shared years of memories.

Dale worked as journeyman and pipe fitter with the UA Local 776 in Lima and previously worked for ABC Heating. He enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles and Blue Grass music. He was also gifted woodworker.

Surviving are his daughters, Cheryl (Don) Creevy of Huntertown, IN; Vickie Hoersten of Van Wert; grandchildren: Kristin (David) Savage of Battle Creek, MI; Joshua (Sabrina) Hoersten of Battle Creek, MI; Megan Hoersten of Van Wert; Andrew Creevy of Huntertown, IN; great-grandchildren: Aaron, Ethan, Caleb, Leia, Caden, Kyler; and sister, Janice (Lawrence) Remagen of AR.

In addition to his parents and wife, Dale was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Merris and son-in-law, Bob Hoersten.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM on Friday, August 30, 2019 the Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, 722 S. Washington St. Van Wert, OH 45891.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, August 31, 2019 at the funeral home with Rev. Ron Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodland Cemetery with Military Honors rendered by the United States Army.

Memorials Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or to Samaritan's Purse.
