Delbert Smith

Delbert C. Smith, 75, of Van Wert, died at 5:56 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana in Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was born October 22, 1937, in Huntington, Ind., the son of the late Chester Ray and Iona Algerine (Kennedy) Smith. He married Janet (Kyle) Smith, who survives in Van Wert.

Mr. Smith retired from Thomas Edison Schools as a workshop specialist. He had also worked at Fruehauf Trailer Company in Fort Wayne for 23 years. He was a member of Trinity Friends Church in Van Wert and was involved with the Banquet Table Food Pantry at the church. He also loved to decorate and make floral arrangements and wedding cakes.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four children, Kimberly Ellis (Lee) Mynatt of Durham, N.C., Rodney (Candy) Smith of Convoy, Pam Smith of Van Wert and Michael (Tammy) Smith of Oakwood, Ill.; one brother, Carlos (Marie) Smith of Goldsboro, N.C.; a sister, Janet Garretson of Huntington, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Amanda (Brock) Overholt, Nathanael Smith, Jordan Smith, Arin Smith, Dezaray Barr, Joshua Barr, Nikolas Ellis and Maranda Mynatt; and a great-grandchild, Grayson Overholt.

A daughter, Janet Barr; five brothers, Gerald, Richard, Leo, Eloise and Fred Smith; and two sisters, Marjorie Caley and Joyce Worthington, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 15, at Trinity Friends Church in Van Wert, with the Revs. Steve Savage and Neil Hammons officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert. Calling hours are from 2-8 p.m. Monday, January 14, and an hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Preferred memorials: Vancrest Activities Fund or Trinity Friends Church.
