Edwin L. "Ed" Bates, 94, of Van Wert, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at Homestead at Towne Center in Van Wert. He was born on November 8, 1928, in South Bend, the son of Clarence C. and Emma J. (Buzek) Bates. On April 29, 1961, he married the former Jacqueline J. King, who preceded him in death. Together, they shared 55 years of marriage.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving with the occupation forces in Japan during WW II.
Ed received his Bachelors Degree in electrical engineering from the Indiana Institute of Technology.
He retired as an electrical engineer from Magnavox Electric Systems Company.
Ed was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Van Wert, the American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert and was a charter member of the Van Wert County Board for the MR/DD.
Surviving are his sons, Jeffrey L. (Jan) Bates of Perrysburg, Ohio and M. Scott Bates of Van Wert; a sister, Susan Sumption of South Bend; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
A graveside service with military rites will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, January 28 at Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ed`s memory may be directed to the Thomas Edison Memorial Endowment Fund of Van Wert.
