Frederic W. Leiter, 91, of Van Wert, died at 1:15 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 2015, at the Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was born April 10, 1924, in Van Wert, the son of Elmer and Mae (Stemen) Leiter, who both preceded him in death. On November 30, 1945, in Ludlow, Kentucky, he married the former Charlotte Gehrlich, who survives.
Also surviving are his four children, Steve (Janet) Leiter of Fairfield, Patty (John) Bigelow of Middle Point, Becki (Ed) Weingartner of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Paul (Laura) Leiter of Indianapolis, Indiana; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Seven brothers and sisters, and a great-grandson, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Leiter was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He retired from the U.S. Post Office after 33 years of service. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Van Wert, and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 in Van Wert.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 4, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, with Pastor Karl Frinke officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery in rural Van Wert County, where graveside military honors will be rendered by combined units of VFW Post 5803 and American Legion 178.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert.
