Gladys W. "Bobbie" Brumby Young, 89, of Van Wert, passed away peacefully at 9:17 p.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at the Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
Gladys W. Young She was born October 3, 1921, in Manchester, England, the daughter of the late Edgar and Kathleen (Hughes) Brumby.
Bobbie served in the British Women's Land Army during World War II and, at 26 years old, met her husband-to-be, Floyd M. Young, and came to the United States. She later became an American citizen. She retired from Brumback Library, where she served as a librarian. Bobbie was an avid reader and was in her element with books. She enjoyed taking trips throughout the United States and abroad, and above everything, she was the happiest with her family and friends. Her children are her legacy and she could not have been loved more by everyone she ever met. She had a way of touching their hearts and left a lasting impression on everyone. She would refer to everyone as "love" and she had a very tender heart. She loved animals and enjoyed many special pets during her lifetime. She had formerly attended Zion Christian Union Church in Grover Hill.
Survivors include her children, Garry B. (Dawn) Young of Cleveland and four daughters, Jeanie Young Goins of North Carolina, Cheryl K. (David) Edwards and Deborah L. (Bryan) Lewis, both of Van Wert, and Lorraine K. (John) Woodyard of Crofton, Ky.; her brother, Ken Brumby, and two sisters, Dorothy (Frank) Grimshaw and Eileen (George) Cross, all reside in England. She was also blessed with 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A sister, Kathleen, and a daughter, Judith A. Young, also preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 26, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert, with the Rev. Dr. Joseph Harr officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.
Calling hours are from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, August 25, at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials: Brumback Library, the Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center or First United Brethren in Christ Church in Van Wert.
