VAN WERT, Ohio - Guillermo "Willie" Alvarez, 74, of Van Wert, died at 9:30 p.m. April 30, 2012, at Van Wert Hospital.
He was born Feb. 12, 1938, in Piedras Negras, Cuayuila, Mexico, to the late Hilaria (Carreon) Alvarez and Encarnacion Alvarez. His wife, Adelina (DeLeon) Alvarez, survives in Van Wert. They were married Feb. 14, 1959, in Homestead, Fla.
Other survivors include his children: Adelina Alvarez, Griselda (Steve) Goings and Rolando (Sara) Alvarez, all of Van Wert; brothers: Robert (Patricia) Alvarez of Sumter, S.C., Servando "Sam" (Margie) Alvarez of Van Wert, Oscar (Gavy) Alvarez of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Joe (Jan) Alvarez of New Haven, Ind., William (Mary) Alvarez of Van Wert, David Alvarez of Sumter, S.C., and Raul Alvarez of Greenville, S.C.; sisters: Maria (Arnold) DeLeon of Van Wert, Irma (Rod) Hoffman of Daleville, Ind., Emma (Richard) Huff of Tipp City, Ohio, and Elsa (Ramon) Benavidez of Van Wert; sisters-in-law: Antonia Alvarez and Alicia Alvarez, and five grandchildren: Nathan and Michael Goings, and Eli, Alaina and Isaac Alvarez.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Juan and Saul Alvarez, and a grandchild: Emily Goings.
He retired from the Federal Mogul Corp. in Van Wert. He was a member of Calvary Evangelical Church in Van Wert and an avid Van Wert Cougar sports fan.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2012, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert. The Revs. Abel DeLeon and Genobeva Flores will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.
Friends may call from 1-3 and 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2012, at the funeral home.
Preferred memorial is to the grandchildren.
