Meindert van den Hengel, 57, of Scott, Ohio died at 2:04 PM on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at his residence. He was born on September 6, 1960 in Gouda, The Netherlands to the late Jacob Cornelis van den Hengel and his mother, Dirkje (Bode) van den Hengel, who survives in Stolwijk, The Netherlands. He married Alie van Erk and she survives in Scott.
Meindert is also survived by his three children, Rick (Rachel) van den Hengel of Paulding, Ohio, Marloes (Joe) Gable of Ft. Jennings, Ohio, and Edwin van den Hengel of Scott, Ohio; sisters, Jacqueline (Theo) Hoogendoorn of Haastrecht, The Netherlands and Judith (Peter de Redelijkheid) van den Hengel of Streefkerk, The Netherlands; and a nephew, Fred Hoogendoorn of Haastrecht, The Netherlands.
Mr. van den Hengel was the owner and operator of van den Hengel Pork, L.L.C. in Scott, Ohio since immigrating to the United States in 2008. Prior to that, he owned and operated M. van den Hengel Varkenshandel (Pork Trading) for 28 years. He was a member in various capacities, including being part of the Hog Exchange Committee and a Vee en Vlees publication columnist, with the Nederlandse Bond voor Handelaren in Vee (Dutch Union for Livestock Traders) and was the Secretary of the Ohio Farmers Union in Paulding County.
Meindert loved his family. He was a friendly, hard-working, and dedicated man who was loyal to those in need. Whether you were family, a friend, or a stranger; Meindert would always lend a helping hand.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, August 20, 2018 at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, 722 S. Washington Street, Van Wert, Ohio, 45891. Burial will follow at Mohr Cemetery, Van Wert County, Ohio.
Visitation will be from 2-6 PM on Sunday, August 19, 2018, at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials may be directed to either the Scott or Grover Hill Volunteer Fire Department.
