Vincent L. Smith of Convoy died at 4:40 a.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014, at his residence.
He was born May 30, 1940, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of the late Charles and Opal (Lyon) Smith. He married Dianna (Hill) Smith, who also preceded him in death.
Survivors include four children, Dawndee (Ken) Smith-Joyce of Chapin, South Carolina, Julie (Richard) Smith of Van Wert, Vincent L. (Jessica) Smith Jr. of Elkhart, Indiana, and Dr. Anthony Smith of Columbus; a sister, Mary Christine American Flag for obituaries 6-2011(Kip) Mohr of Stow; and four grandchildren, Mimi Gilbert, Jalyn Smith, Claire Smith and Emma Smith.
Mr. Smith was a retired barber from Decatur, Indiana, who had also retired from the former Sonoco Fibre Drums plant in Van Wert. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Convoy.
Mr. Smith was also a U.S. Navy veteran who served in Vietnam, was a member of American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert (transferred from the Decatur Legion post) and had coached baseball in Wren for many years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert, with Ray Etzler officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in Convoy.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, and an hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.
