VAN WERT, Ohio - William R. Good II, 88, of Van Wert, went to meet his Lord on Oct. 6, 2011, at the Vancrest Health Care Center in Van Wert.
William was born on March 7, 1923, in Ft. Wayne, Ind., to the late Katherine (Kraus) Good and William R. Good. They moved to Harrisburg, Pa., where he grew up and attended Lemoyne High School. While still in school, he enlisted in the Navy on March 2, 1942, and after graduating in 1942, he entered the Navy serving on the USS Witchita, a heavy cruiser in WWII, seeing action in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. They received 13 battle stars. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 25, 1945, as Yoeman 2nd Class/V-6, USNR.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty (Boch) Good, whom he married on June 24, 1945. She passed away on Feb. 23, 1984. He is also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Richardson and Peg Grosser, two brothers-in-law, Richey Richardson and Robert Grosser, a nephew, Freddie Grosser, and one stepgranddaughter, Amy Roop.
He is survived by his wife, Luella (Walls) Wade Good whom he married on May 5, 1986; three children: Nancy (Tom) Keltner - Denver, Colo., Bonnie (Tim) Haynes - St. Michaels, Md., and William R. (Cindy) Good III - Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by four stepchildren; Penny (Bob) Barker - Van Wert, Karen (Bill) Nostrant - Cloverdale, Ohio, Nicholas (Penny) Wade -Van Wert and Oribel (Gary) Perl - Convoy, Ohio, fourteen stepgrandchildren, thirty-four stepgreat-grandchildren, and ten stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
After the war, Bill worked for Simplex Time Co., the Valvoline Oil Co., and the Marathon Oil Co. as a district salesman which brought him to the Van Wert area. In 1963, he purchased land in Grover Hill, Ohio, that later became known as the Blue Water Camp Ground. He later worked for Straley Real Estate and Bob Gamble Realty in Van Wert. He and Luella later opened the Heritage Coin & Antique Store in Van Wert which they ran for nine years until retiring and closing the store in 1995.
Bill was a happy-go-lucky fellow who loved to travel and look for antiques, and wheel & deal.
He was a lifetime member of the Grover Hill VFW, and a member of the Van Wert American Legion Post. He attended Trinity Friends Church and the Good Shepherd Nazarene Church.
Per Bill's wishes, there will be no visitation or services. A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
Preferred memorial is to Alzheimer's Foundation.
